We summarize below the data that we have used for calibration of the VIC model at UW forecast points within the Columbia, Colorado, and Sacramento-San Joaquin River basins. These data were obtained from management agencies in each basin, who have removed most effects of water management (reservoir storage and diversions) upstream of the forecast points in varying ways (in the case of the Colorado and Sacramento-San Joaquin, the effects of diversions have been removed altogether, in the case of the Columbia, they have been standardized to a common year’s level of withdrawals, hence the term “naturalized” is not strictly correct and the term “adjusted” is more appropriate). In the case of the Columbia River basin, flows from two agencies, the National Weather Service and Bonneville Power Administration, have both been used; however our comparisons show that differences between the two data sets in the overlapping period are generally quite small.
