How to use the Scanner

FOR SINGLE PAGE SCANS

The scanner automatically detects whether or not to use the document feeder based on whether or not it is open. To close the document feeder, simply reach to the top back of the scanner and bring it forward and it will close like the lid of a box.

Log into the machine using your Windows username and password

In the upper-right hand corner of the screen, the toolbar for Microtek Scanwizard is visible. Click on "Scan." This brings up the beginner user interface which is all you need. Place your sheet on the scanner and click "Preview" and you will get a basic preview of the page. Select your scan settings for color and resolution on the right and then click "Scan to." Select a directory and filename and click "Ok" and the scan will proceed. Remember: do not leave files on the Windows machines since they are not backed up. When you are done scanning, transfer all your files to a UNIX machine.

FOR MULTI-PAGE SCANS

The scanner automatically detects whether or not to use the document feeder based on whether or not it is open. To open the document feeder, simply reach to the top of the scanner and put your thumb in the "handle" of the sheet feeder and lift it up and it will rest in an open and slightly leaning back position.

Place your paper in the document feeder facing away from the front of the scanner, with the top of the document facing down into the mechanism. The document feeder CAN ONLY HANDLE 25 SHEETS AT A TIME. Also - the feeding mechanism should not be considered as reliable as a photocopier. It is best to have an extra copy of your original in case it gets eaten by the feeding mechanism.

Select your scan settings for color and resolution on the right and then click "Scan to." Select a directory and filename and click "Ok" and the scan will proceed. Images will have numbers appended to them according to the page, so it will start with your base name (eg: Image) and append 3 digits (eg: Image001, Image002, Image003 etc). Remember: do not leave files on the Windows machines since they are not backed up. When you are done scanning, transfer all your files to a UNIX machine.

You can do a preview in sheet feed mode, but you will have to reload the feeder after you have previewed.

Under the "Start" menu select "Adobe Acrobat 5.0." This is not the same as Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Go to "File"-"Import"-"Scan" and then for "Device" select "Microtek Scanwizard 5" and Single-sided and click "Ok." Microtek Scanwizard will open up just as in a regular scan.

Select your scan settings for color and resolution on the right and then click "Scan" and the scan will proceed. Recommended settings are Scan type - Black and White, Image Purpose On Screen viewing. For color figures these can be scanned individually and inserted into the pdf. This will help keep the total file size down.

Remember: do not leave files on the Windows machines since they are not backed up. When you are done scanning, transfer all your files to a UNIX machine.
