Western U.S. Spatial Analyses

The hydrologic model domain is currently distributed into 10 basins, ~41,000 grid cells, each of which simulate the water balance for a variety of vegetation types and elevation zones (up to 5) enclosed by the cell area (the spatial resolution is 1/8 degree longitude by latitude). The links on this page are for plots (maps) of the distributed, grid-cell values at a point in time or averaged over a period of time.

At right are plots showing current conditions for soil moisture and snow water equivalent, expressed in terms of percentile with respect to the historical period 1960-1999. The following links lead to additional spatial plots in the tables below for current hydrologic conditions, climate and hydrologic forecasts.

Current Conditions

Current (initial) Soil Moisture and snowpack (SWE) conditions on the start day of the forecast are shown as percentiles with respect to the 1960-99 distribution for that day, as anomalies with respect to the 1960-99 average for that day, and as amounts. The SWE comparisons are thresholded (shown above a minimum value, e.g., 1 cm) because the results are less reliable (and informative) for shallow snowpacks.

NOTE: Between December and June, the final/adjusted SWE state is created by using observed SWE anomalies to adjust the raw simulated initial SWE state (both depicted in the links above), before running the forecasts.

Hydrologic Forecast

The forecasts of spatially-distributed monthly-average climate and hydrology variables are shown in three ways: amount, anomaly and percentile. The plots are for the ensemble average. Anomalies and percentiles are calculated relative to the period 1971-2000 (30 years).
